BELLEVILLE – Quinte Waste Solutions is reminding people that household hazardous waste has to be disposed of properly.

Matthew Daigneau, from Quinte Waste Solutions, explains it’s dangerous to keep them at home because a lot of these products have dangerous chemicals, which do not degrade as well as other items and could have potential impact on the environment if they get into soil or water.

They also can potentially cause physical injury to sanitation workers, or contaminate wastewater treatment systems if poured down drains or toilets. They can also cause injury to wild animal, pets and even children is not disposed of properly.

Some of the household hazardous wastes you can recycle and dispose properly are all types of cleaners, cooking oil, pests poisons, chlorine bleaches, paints, car care products and even your old TV, smartphone or a keyboard and mouse. Check out full list at Quinte Waste Solutions Hazardous Waste [2].

Quinte Waste Solutions depot takes wastes both from the residential stream and from industrial, commercial, institution (ICI) sector, but they “definitely get more stuff from residents,” said Daigneau. That’s because the ICI sector often have their own contracts to get their wastes disposed of properly correctly.

According to Statistics Canada [3], 63% of people in Ontario took or sent leftover paint or solvents, engine oil or anti-freeze to dispose of to a depot or drop-off centre, and 41% disposed of unwanted electronic devices properly.

Daigneau sees younger generation get very involved with recycling and proper disposal of the waste.

“they are extremely knowledgeable and properly exposed to those types of things,” he said. “They grow up with a mentality that the environment is extremely important for the future and highly aware of the environmental issues and the importance of proper recycling and proper disposal of hazard waste.”

The next Hazardous and E-Waste Drop-Off in Belleville is happening on Nov. 28, 2 pm – 7 pm at 75 Wallbridge Cres, but the Recycling Depot is open from Monday to Friday 8 am – 5 pm. If you are not from Belleville check out other locations in Quinte [4], where you can safely recycle and dispose waste.
