United Way gets support from Belleville council

By Renée Rodgers

Mayor Neil Ellis has declared this September United Way month in Belleville.

Connie Reid, campaign director of United Way of Quinte, asked for support in the charity’s upcoming campaign at a Belleville city council meeting August 8.

In addition to naming the month of September after the charity, council also granted Reid’s request to hang 30 United Way signs and banners throughout Belleville from September 1 to December 31.

Council will also allow United Way to use a city bus for their Seeing is Believing tour. The tour takes United Way volunteers and donors to see programs and services funded by the charity.

“In the 2010 campaign, well over $1,636,000 was raised to help fund 80 programs throughout Hastings and Prince Edward County,” said Ellis. “This would not be possible without the support of a caring community and support from our city. (United Way funds) such programs as Belleville Community Trust, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Brain Injury and Bridging the Gap to name a few.”
