Loyalist students coping with early semester stress

With September coming to an end students at Loyalist College could start to feel more stress settling in.

Causes for stress in a student’s life could include homework/assignments, sports, partying, being away from home, and getting sick. A build up of things could also be the cause.

Mind and wellness nurse Valerie Geen said, “Around this time students start to get colds and the flu, with the changing of season, they also have that extra added stress of moving away from home.”

The counseling and mind and wellness departments get busier as they know by the third or forth week they will be seeing students all day long, said Geen.

Pre-health student Holly Rogers is not feeling the stress yet but said “I would go to the health and wellness centre that’s the project I was working on this morning, going to speak to Valerie Geen.”

Some students aren’t feeling the approach of pressure yet, but instead are buckling down and not letting distractions get the best of them.

Matt Top, a second year police foundations student said “I would counter act it by cutting back on the partying and really bunkering down and setting my priorities straight.”

Also being the first month of school students are still getting into the groove of their course and all thier assignments. With some courses being more demanding of work and others being more hands on.

“Still getting in the hang of things like the course load and everything, and right now were still getting all our assignments and everything so right now its getting a little stressful,” said Elliot Boudreau, second year radio broadcasting.

Suggested ways students are able to cope with stress include a lot of different ways such as stress management, talking about what they know already, being physically active, and a healthy diet. Also talking to a peer or someone they know are available to talk to when needed.
