BELLEVILLE – Ontario’s new distracted driving laws, [2] which came into effect Jan. 1, are more strict and have harsher penalties than ever before.
Using or even holding a phone or typing on a GPS while driving is considered distracted driving. The first offence can have a fine up to $1,000, three demerit points and a three-day licence suspension, with higher penalties on following infractions.
The distracted driving laws are not limited to handling electronic devices. Reading and eating while behind the wheel are also considered forms of distracted driving.
You can turn hands-free devices on and off while driving, but that’s it. Secured mounted devices, such as a GPS, are still allowed under the new rules.
Using Bluetooth is permitted, as long as it’s hands-free.
