Loyalist College combats homelessness by joining 20K Sock Day Challenge

By Allen Steinberg [1]

BELLEVILLE – Loyalist College is looking to knock your socks off this winter.

Loyalist’s student government has challenged other Ontario colleges to see who can collect the most socks for the 20K Sock Day charity initiative by We Be Us [2]. We Be Us is a program focused on donating clean, dry clothing to homeless people.

The goal is to collect as many new pairs of socks as possible and donate them to local shelters. In the winter, it is extremely difficult to keep warm for the 200,000 homeless people in Canada. These socks are a necessity for warmth.

Students can visit the 20K Sock booth on Wednesdays from 12 – 1 p.m. in the Dining Hall, until February 5 where they will be collecting new socks as well as monetary donations.

In addition, a bin will be located in front of The Spa at Loyalist for sock donations.
