By Graham Whittaker [1]

BELLEVILLE – The Alzheimer Society of Hastings and Prince Edward [2] counties is hosting its first of three used book sales which collectively raises 10 percent of the organizations funds.

Approximately $12,000 is raised between all three each year, all of which goes towards local services.

It is taking place at the Bay View Mall from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to raise funds for the society through the sales of donated books.

On Tuesday everything will be full price, $4 for hardcovers and $3 for softcovers, but it will be the day with the largest selection available.

On Wednesday books are sold at half price and on Thursday the cost is $5 to fill a bag with any books that are still available.

This is the first of three this year. Two more will be hosted in the first week of both June and November.

The society has been hosting these book sales since 1989.

The organization serves the community by providing support to families and patients, along with education about Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease which affects the parts of the brain which deal with memory and thinking. Symptoms tend to present themselves in someone’s mid-60s and the effects of the disease are irreversible.
