UPDATE: Tragedy strikes family following fatal collision in Port Hope

  • December 3, 2020 at 3:01 pm

By Marissa Settatree

PORT HOPE – A 12-year-old boy is dead, and his 10-year-old sister is in hospital after being struck by a car on 7th Line while waiting for the bus Wednesday morning in Port Hope.

The boy was pronounced dead on the scene, while his sister was taken to a trauma centre in Toronto with critical injuries.

According to police, a car heading northbound slid and struck the two children just before 8:00 a.m. The driver was only 17-years old and taken to the hospital to be treated for shock after an accident.

Brendan Kerin released a statement on Facebook Thursday morning, the children’s father, addressing the tragedy.

Kerin thanked the community for their support for his family following the incident.

“On behalf of Jennifer, Aishling, and myself, the community response and support have been overwhelming. We cannot thank you enough,” he wrote.

He went on to that the first responders in the area for saving his daughter’s life.

“Shea is alive because of the first responders’ speedy and professional actions,” Kerin wrote.

Shea Kerin is currently being treated for her injuries at Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto.

The father also went on to say that his 10-year-old daughter was not in the clear yet.

“All I can say at the moment, Shea needs all of our prayers and thoughts. She is still very much in a precarious situation.”

Kerin’s son, Cormac, was described as a caring young boy who loved school and those around him.

“Cormac was the most beautiful boy a parent could wish for. The thing to know about Cormac was how much he cared about others. He loved his school, teachers, classmates, friends, and teammates,” Kerin said.

Police continue to investigate the situation.
