New call centre in Trenton set to stay awhile

By Marc Venema

The revolving door of call centres coming and going in Trenton should soon be over, says Quinte West’s manager of economic development.

Linda Lisle said SP Data, the latest company to announce plans to setup a call centre in Trenton, will be a secure employer.

Lisle said a lot of call centres used to be set up with just one provider, but the trend is now seeing call centres setting up multiple contracts, meaning if one drops out or goes out of business, there will still be work.

Lisle said that’s what SP Data will be doing with its new location in Trenton.

“Part of their business plan is to have multiple contracts,” said Lisle. “It provides better security for the company and employees.”

The North American company announced they would be bringing a cell center to 400 Sydney Street, Trenton, last month. The move will open up about 100 job opportunities.

The location was previously home to Teletech Holdings Inc., also a call centre that closed two years ago after their client dropped its services.

Lisle said although the building sat empty for a while, there was still interest in other companies bring their centres there since it’s fully equipped and ready to go, as the industry calls “plug and play.”

This will be SP Data’s third Canadian location. They also have locations in Hamilton and Toronto.

A press release sent out by the company said they are in the recruiting stage and are set to open this summer.
