A new, state-of-the-art courthouse in Belleville is right on schedule and going up as planned, says the project manager.
The courthouse, located across the river from city hall at the intersection of Bridge St. West and James St., is expected to be complete by June of 2013, said project manager Matthew Rinfret.
The over 170,000-square-foot Quinte Consolidated Courthouse project got underway last summer and will be home to 11 courtrooms, as well hearing rooms and other court services. The building is being constructed by PCL Constructors Canada Inc.
Rinfret said the structure for the six-story building should be completed soon.
“At this time the structure is almost nearly complete,” Rinfret said. He said next will come windows, exterior masonry, and a roof.
“Then starting later this summer and the fall you will see landscape take form and by the end of the year it’s pretty much going to look from the outside how it’s going to look in the future.”
Rinfret said the project is right on schedule.
“We are going at it full force here while we have nice weather,” Rinfret said. “Then all winter we will be concentrated on finishing the courtrooms.”
He said among the many finishes in the building will be lots of woodwork inside the courtrooms.
The project valued at just under $250 million is funded by a public-private partnership.
The new building will act as the main justice centre in Belleville. There are now three other courthouses in Belleville, as well as one in Trenton.
