Couple sees Amazing Race as just another challenge

By April Lawrence

It seemed like life was falling apart for Trent University student Jennifer Rowden.

After leaving school during the second semester of her second year of university, Rowden, 21, was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. She said the doctors told her it was something she would have to deal with forever. It was information Rowden refused to accept as her new reality.

“I had no life last year,” said Rowden. “I thought everything was over, when they were like you have anxiety and you’re always going to have it.”

She said as long as her boyfriend Ron Wishlow is around she’s usually able to be calm.

“I just rely on him,” she said.

Rowden is determined to not let the disorder control her. This year she returned to school as a first step in overcoming her new obstacles. She said she is hoping to have the chance to push herself further and prove to herself and everyone that anxiety doesn’t control what you do.

Rowden and Wishlow, 28, are currently in the process of auditioning for the up and coming The Amazing Race Canada 2013.

“If I could make it through I would totally not be concerned about anything else in life,” said Rowden. “I could get through anything. If I could go on the Race and not freak- out and not have to quit.”

Rowden isn’t the only one that has obstacles to overcome if they make it onto the show. Wishlow was diagnosed as a type one diabetic when he was about 12 years old. The couple is concerned about times when he will be able to eat, so he can maintain his sugar levels.

“It’s all about establishing a routine,” said Wishlow.

He said the first couple days would be difficult, but once they knew how everything was formatted they would be able to make a routine.

Wishlow said diabetes is a bit of a bump in the road, that causes you to slow down but doesn’t limit you. He said that with focus and determination they could take on anything.

The couple has wanted to participate in The Amazing Race for years, but Canadian participants haven’t been allowed. They found out about The Amazing Race Canada nearly a week after Wishlow’s Dad passed away.

Wishlow’s family sat down to watch The Amazing Race the day after his Dad’s funeral services, trying to find some normalcy. Watching the show together had been like a tradition for Wishlow and his family for years. At the end of the episode Wishlow said the introduction of The Amazing Race Canada 2013 came on. Wishlow said at that moment he and Rowden knew that now was there time and they said they had to audition.

In attempts to gain the attention of the producers they have created a Facebook page for friends, family and complete strangers to show support. They have penned the name team jENNRON and both have said they are ready for anything and determined to overcome every obstacle they face.

To audition for the show, the couple must fill out an online application, agree to the online agreement and release, and make a three-minute audition video. They have to send in individual headshots and a team photo. The deadline for them to apply is February 28, 2013. Applicants will find out if they made the race in March.
