Loyalist presents new course calendar

By Catherine Coleman

Big changes have happened over the summer break at Loyalist. Future Loyalist College students will now have a better idea of the college community. A new course calendar was introduced at the first board of governors’ meeting for the 2013-2014 academic year.

President Maureen Piercy and Executive Director of College Advancement and External Relations Dianne Spencer unveiled the 2014-2015 Loyalist College Viewbook.

“It’s a very important part of our marketing outreach for the college,” said Spencer.

The book proudly displays photos from campus and around the Quinte region, including pictures of staff and students in their daily lives. The design showcases what life in this area is like and activities offered in the community. For example, a glamorous photo of Belleville’s Empire Theatre is featured on pages 30 to 31 as well as a scenic view of downtown Belleville on the following page. The book also shows various facilities around campus such as the Link Lounge, residences and the health centre.

Another goal of the new course calendar is to take all the resources Loyalist offers and put them into one place, making them more accessible to potential students.

Spencer explained the course calendar was an effort made in response to input from various sources.

“It’s very important to talk to prospective students, current students, alumni as well as admissions council, and certainly through the enrolment services group, other staff across the college, and of course other colleges to find out, in terms of trends, what works. We have revamped our calendar on that basis,” said Spencer.

President Piercy summed it up.

“This is a marketing piece designed to make you want to come to Loyalist College,” she said.

That marketing effort is already paying dividends.

It is estimated that enrolment has gone up by two percent this year. Some programs are full and have wait lists. Pre health, practical nursing and welding are some of the programs over subscribed.

Updating of LoyalistCollege.com is also planned and more information will be available on that at a later date, said Spencer.
