Construction students to build a cabin at Bon Echo

By Morgan Davy

BELLEVILLE – The Ontario government has formed a partnership with Loyalist College that will provide campers at Bon Echo Provincial Park a new place to spend the night.

Construction students have an opportunity to build a rustic cabin at the park that will sleep six people. The project is giving students a hands-on chance to take part in every step of the building process, from framing to finishing.

Bon Echo is located in Lennox and Addington County, about 100 kilometres northeast of Belleville.

“This project is a win-win, with Bon Echo Provincial Park receiving the a new cabin for park users to enjoy, and college students gaining valuable hands-on work experience that will better prepare them to enter the province’s workforce,” David Orazietti, the minister of natural resources, said in announcing the project.

The Ontario government is investing $295 million over two years into the new Youth Job Strategy. The goal is to create 30,000 job opportunities for young people in the province.

“It’s a terrific vote of confidence in the excellence of our students and faculty that they have chosen to partner with Loyalist on this project,” said Maureen Piercy, the president of Loyalist College.
