BELLEVILLE–The Loyalist College Respect Committee teamed up with the International Centre today to run a fundraiser for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, collecting donations around the school.

The total collected was a little over $1, 700, organizers said.

Photojournalism student Paulina Yu, who is from the Philippines, was one of the volunteers collecting money. While her family was not directly affected by the storm, she said it is frustrating being so far away from home at such a time. That’s why she and a fellow Filipino student were taking part in the fundraiser.

“Even though our families are okay, it is still our country and we want to help out,” said Yu. “Being here in Canada so far away it is kind of frustrating … Basically all we can do is pray and volunteer for collecting donations.”
