United Way Quinte surpasses its campaign goal

By Katie Coleman

BELLEVILLE – Times are tough but the United Way of Quinte was able to celebrate surpassing its annual fundraising goal of $2 million Tuesday night at the Empire Theatre.

Achievement Night was held to recognize donors who helped the organization raise $2,039,723 in the 2013 campaign.

Executive director Judi Gilbert said she is proud of the community’s contribution but added the goal was hard-won.

“The needs continue to go up. It is a struggle; we’re all having to tighten our belts. That they continue to support us means a lot,” Gilbert said.

“It’s very rewarding to know the work we do is helping so many. It’s a huge achievement.”

Among the donors was Loyalist College, which raised over $10,410. Funds were raised by the college through special events such as a pancake breakfast in October, as well as through donations by individuals.

Some contributors were presented the “Outstanding Commitment to the United Way of Quinte” award. The city of Belleville and Quinte Healthcare were among them.

The United Way provides financial support to over 40 programs in Hastings and Prince Edward counties. The programs include affordable housing, child care, and assisting low-income families to heat their homes in the winter months.
