BELLEVILLE – Loyalist College [3] received a silver certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program [4] for its Sustainable Skills, Technology and Life Sciences Centre [5] Wednesday.

The Canada Green Building Council awards the LEED certification. The award recognizes buildings that have energy-efficient design, construction and operation.

Daryl Kramp [6], the MP for Prince Edward-Hastings, attended the ceremony. He said that the quality of the centre was no surprise to him.

“I wasn’t shocked, because I’d been on the grounds evaluating … the proposal since it was conceived.”

Gary Goodyear [7], the federal minister of state for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario [8], said he was amazed at the energy-efficient centre.

“It’s a beautiful space, lots of light – I wish I was in college right now. I’m surprised that it’s as beautiful as it is. It’s freezing outside but in here it’s a nice warm bright space,” he said.

The facility was built in 2010-11 with a $16.6 million investment from the provincial and federal governments.
