Toronto man convicted of drunk driving in Belleville

  • March 27, 2014 at 12:59 pm

By Alisa Howlett

BELLEVILLE – A Toronto man pleaded guilty in Belleville court on Thursday after he was charged with impaired driving earlier in March.

Belleville Police received a call on March 9 about a motorist driving a blue Volvo driving erratically on Sidney St. Officers caught up with the car travelling west on Highway 401. Court documents stated that the vehicle was swaying between lanes and driving under the speed limit.

A sixty-one-year-old Toronto man was charged with impaired driving and driving with more than the legal limit of alcohol in his blood. He also had an open bottle of vodka under the driver’s seat.

Justice Stephen Hunter gave the man the minimum penalty: a $1,000 fine and a suspension of his driver’s licence for one year.

Hunter said a minimum penalty is usually given to first-time offenders, especially if they plead guilty.
