ALNWICK-HALDMAND- The Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a sizeable fraud on an elderly couple from Alnwick-Haldmand over the past few months.
An 83-year old and her 85-year old husband were both victims to multiple scamming ploys, according to the OPP.
The investigation is still in the early stages but Northumberland OPP believe the couple were scammed for up to $60,000. Northumberland OPP are unsure of is how many people or persons are responsible for the scam.
The unknown scammers have no shortage of tactics, according to a recent police report. The elderly couple were convinced they need to purchase certain parts for their computer and was also told to give up their bank account numbers and to transfer large sums of money from their line of credit. On top of this there have been multiple phone calls to the couple stating things such as lottery winnings from Spain, calls from fake police officers claiming to have rewards for their assistance and that the woman would win $2.5 million if she sent them $4,000 to have access to the winnings
The OPP’s main piece of advice is that places like the bank that have important personal information will not call you because they already have access to said information.
