Necessities coming to Loyalist by the truckload

By Joseph Quigley [1]

BELLEVILLE – A truckload of toiletries will be dumping its goods at Loyalist in support of the United Way [2] on November 6th.

Loyalist’s Public Relations Program will host the 5th annual Truckload Sale in the Shark Tank Pub. Faculty, students and staff can order discounted products including deodorant, toilet paper and shampoo which will be delivered on November 6th.

All proceeds will go directly to the United Way of Quinte. Through five years, the Truckload Sale has raised over $50,000, and currently has more than 100 orders this year.

Public Relations Professor and Co-Ordinator Kerry Ramsay said the sale offers Loyalist the chance to get a good deal on the cleaning merchandise.

“I think it’s exciting to know that you can get a great bargain while supporting a great cause,” said Ramsay.

The event is also a class assignment for public relations students, who all worked to organize it. Ramsay says it gives them good in-job experience.

“It allows them to participate in the planning and executing of a major event on campus,” she said. “This opportunity allows them to work together in a safe and a controlled environment with hands on supervision by the faculty.”

Public relations student Melanie Lyman said she finds the assignment to be a positive learning opportunity.

“It’s more like the first crack of a work duty,” said Lyman. “Everybody has their own role, everybody’s expected to implement their task. I found it great. It’s teaching me to do hands-on fundraising.”

The Public Relations department is accepting orders using their form  [3]until October 30th at 3 p.m.  You can submit it electronically to unitedway@loyalistc.on.ca or give the form to room 1N1/1N2.
