BELLEVILLE – Loyalist College will welcome Canadian Blood Services to campus on Thursday for a blood typing clinic in the dining hall.
Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. specialists from the organization will identify the blood type of any volunteer.
The Canadian Blood Services will then return on Friday November 17 to collect blood donations.
They say blood typing is important because only around half of Canadians are eligible to donate, and only one in sixty actually do.
The lack of donors is troubling because the demand for blood only increases. Canadian Blood Services says that the demand increases by two percent every year. While two percent is a relatively low number it translates into an additional 17,000 donations needed annually.
Furthermore, the need for blood is relentless. A Canadian needs blood approximately every minute. It could take up to 50 donations worth to treat one car accident victim.
