Transgender day of remembrance at Loyalist College

By Alisa Howlett [1]

BELLEVILLE – The Rainbow Alliance Group [2] and Respect Committee [3] at Loyalist College will be hosting Transgender Day of Remembrance [4] on Nov. 20.

Find out about the history of the day, what it means, and how to be an LGBTQ [5] ally. An information booth will be set up outside the Shark Tank.  [6]

“Unfortunately homophobia [7] and transphobia [8] continue to happen all over the world, including on our campus. It’s a day to celebrate people who are transgender or identify as LGBTQ,” Sarah Michelle Ogden, a Rainbow Alliance Group representative, said. “It’s a day to speak up against homophobia and transphobia. The only way that things are going to change is if we talk about this type of stuff and spread awareness and knowledge.”

Anyone is welcome to stop by the information booth, Ogden says. Students are also encouraged to sign up to be a part of the Rainbow Alliance Group, she added.

The information booth will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
