BELLEVILLE – A new captain took the helm Monday at Belleville city hall.

Taso Christopher was sworn in as the city’s mayor. His new council colleagues were sworn in as well.

As much as it was a significant political moment in the city’s history, it was an important moment in the life of a man and his family.

It was an intimate affair. In front of family and friends, Christopher was visibly moved as outgoing mayor, Neil Ellis, presented him with the chain of office.

Later, during his inaugural speech Christopher became choked-up again when speaking about outgoing mayor Neil Ellis.

“There is a lot of emotion there,” said Christopher, “I have profound pride for my family and in the municipality. Taking the oath of office as the leader and mayor is a phenomenal responsibility.”

Christopher’s daughter, Dora, said she was taken aback when she saw he dad cry. She said her dad is a very passionate and proud man.

“I never see my dad cry. When I saw him cry I got teary-eyed,” said Dora.

Ellis said he thinks Christopher’s experience as a councilor has prepared him for his role as mayor.

“Sometimes there are going to be some tough challenges. Having the experience, eight years of it, I think he will do well. I think that experience will show in spades.”

During the speech Christopher declared his family his greatest asset.

“To my wife and three daughters, Angelina, Dora and Michelle, your unwavering love and support is my greatest source of strength and joy,” said Christopher.

Christopher’s wife Betty said she was proud of her husband’s accomplishment and “we are there to support him 100%.”

As for Christopher, he said he’s ready to start his new job.

“I am looking forward to getting started tomorrow morning at 9 o’clock.”

More to come….
