BELLEVILLE – For 47 years, the Christmas Sharing Program [3] has been helping those in need during the holidays. This year the demand has grown says organizers.
Pam Smith, coordinator for the Christmas Sharing Program, says 1336 local people have taken advantage of the program, which is funded on community generosity.
“We’ve have had a number of people this year who said they never thought they would be here,” Smith said.
Why is there such an increase over last year? “There have been more layoffs this year” according to Smith.
The Christmas Sharing Program assists families in need over the holidays. It offers low-incomes families a festive Christmas dinner through food sharing boxes as well as toys from the Belleville firefighters’ toy drive.
The program will also be sponsoring the annual community Christmas dinner held at the Salvation Army Church [4] on 290 Bridge Street West from at noon on Christmas day.
Transportation for the dinner can be provided for those who need it. Take out meals are also provided for individuals who cannot get out to the dinner in person.
The community Christmas dinner is an open event, open to anyone who wishes to spend Christmas with others.
Anyone interested in the dinner must call 613-969-1020 before December 22nd.
Smith also noted that this event and the Christmas Sharing Program are available to students or anyone else who may be in need.
