For the first time a Belleville curling team will represent the province at a national junior curling championship later this month.
Ontario’s Junior Men’s curling team will be represented by Team Calwell, from the Quinte Curling Club [2], according to the club’s website. They traveled to Cambridge last week, where they participated in the Ontario Junior Provincial bonspiel [3] to determine who will represent Team Ontario in this year’s Canadian Junior Curling Championships.
The foursome will represent Ontario at the 2015 M&M Meats Canadian Junior Curling Championships beginning Jan. 24 in Corner Brook, N.L.
Skip, Mac Calwell lead his team of Kurt Armstrong, Morgan Calwell, Matt Pretty and coach Greg Pretty had a nearly perfect record during the five-day bonspiel.
Twins Mac and Morgan Calwall dreamed of competing [4] on the national and international stage when they were interviewed two years ago by QNetNews.
The Quinte-area team only had one loss in the round-robin tournament action, and overcame tough competition to do so.
Team Calwell and his team took on an undefeated team from the Annandale Golf and Curling Club in the final round.
Calwell lead 3-0 in the first two ends and won 8-2 for the title.
The winner of the Canadian championships will represent the country at the World Junior Championships in February in Estonia.
QNet News will be speaking with Team Calwell and coaches to ask what is next for the young team, where they draw their inspiration from and what they are doing to prepare for the tournament.
