Waterfowl flock to Presqu’ile Provincial Park

By Michelle Poirier [1]

BELLEVILLE – Tens of thousands of waterfowl are returning to Presqu’ile Provincial Park [2] for spring and the Presqu’ile Waterfowl Weekend [3] is taking full advantage of this.

Saturday, March 14 and Sunday, March 15 will be the 39th annual weekend this natural spectacle has taken place. The fun runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and there is a $10 per vehicle park entrance fee, unless you have a seasonal or annual park pass.

There could be up to 25 different species of ducks, geese and swans. They rest and eat in Presqu’ile Bay each spring before flying further north or west to nest.

Friends of Presqu’ile [4] are the sponsors of this weekend. They will be providing spotting scopes and knowledgeable volunteers to help find and identify the waterfowl.

Added attractions will be open for the weekend as well. The Nature Centre will host children’s activities, duck and taxidermy displays, a question-and-answer period and a showcase from carver Gary McPherson on the art of bird carving and photography. The Lighthouse Centre will feature photography and art by Lynda Barber and Sherrie Greig and a spring raffle. The Friends Gift Shop will be open.

Starting at 11 a.m. attendees can purchase a barbecue lunch.

All proceeds will go toward projects in the park.

The event will be located at 328 Presqu’ile Parkway, Brighton.
