Belleville man faces child-pornography charges

By Bevan Hamilton [1]

BELLEVILLE – A 23-year-old Belleville man has been arrested on child-pornography charges, after an international investigation.

The man was charged with possessing, accessing and distributing child pornography over a period of four months. He was also charged with luring a young person by way of telecommunications, and making sexually explicit material available to a young person.

The investigation began in January when Microsoft told the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children [2] that it had discovered inappropriate content in an online Microsoft cloud account, according to the Belleville Police. It was determined that the account-holder was in Canada and the RCMP took over the case. They discovered that the content was being accessed in Belleville. As a result of multiple search warrants, Belleville Police arrested the man Wednesday.

He was held in custody for a show-cause hearing, a formal bail hearing that occurs when the police are not prepared to release an accused person on a promise to appear later in court.  The hearing took place Thursday and the man was released on bail. He is scheduled to appear in court again on May 7.
