HILLIER – The harvest at Sugarbush Vineyards [10] is underway despite the cold spring.
Sugarbush, owned by Robert and Sally Peck, is having a good harvest this year unlike some other Prince Edward County vineyards.
“We have grapes. Other places don’t have any grapes,” Sally Peck said.
She explained that what saved their grapes this spring was a wind machine – engine-driven fans that pull warm air down during cold days to raise the air temperature around crops that are sensitive to cold.
“That really helped us out,” Peck said. “Without the wind machine we probably wouldn’t have much to pick either.”
In general the growing season at Sugarbush was good, she said: “We had a nice dry, relatively warm summer. It wasn’t too hot. It wasn’t too dry. It wasn’t too wet.”
Sugarbush has been in operation since 2002, with its first harvest in 2006.
