BELLEVILLE – A local bakery is honouring veterans in a unique way.
Katrina’s Cakes and Treats [6] on North Front Street in Belleville has made Remembrance Day cupcakes for the 4th year in a row. The vanilla and chocolate cakes have a red poppy made out of icing on top.
Michelle Wilson, a cashier at the bakery, says there has been an overwhelmingly positive response to the cupcakes.
http://www.qnetnews.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/selection-from-bakery-recording.mp3 [7]In previous years, Katrina’s has made cookies and cake pops shaped like poppies. Because the cupcakes have been getting such a good response, Katrina’s has decided to make them on a larger scale next year.
Wilson says the reason the bakery makes the cupcakes is to honour the veterans in the community.
“We all have people in our lives that have served in the military and it’s important for us to honour their memory,” she said.
People have been coming into the bakery and sharing stories about loved ones who are in the military. Wilson said that a woman came in Wednesday and bought the whole display of cupcakes, instructing Wilson to give them away to people. Each customer still insisted on paying for them, she said.
All the proceeds from the sales will go towards local veterans, as well as the True Patriot Love [8] charity, an organization that helps former soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
The Poppy cupcakes are $2 each.
