TRENTON – The Trenton Golden Hawks [3] defeated the Oakville Blades [4] Wednesday night and continue to sit well atop the Ontario Junior Hockey League standings [5].
The win at the Duncan McDonald Memorial Gardens puts the Golden Hawks’ record at an impressive 33 wins, three losses, two overtime losses and one tie. The team has just one regulation loss in its last 15 games.
Although Trenton was trailing 2-1 after the end of the first period, the team regrouped during the first intermission and played the rest of the game with more discipline, head coach Jerome Dupont said.
“I thought we got affected by them chirping us a bit. We were a little distracted,” he said. “When we put that aside and channeled our efforts into our game, I thought we were real good in the second and third” periods.
Trenton was down a man at the beginning of the second period, on a slashing penalty to forward Lucas Brown.
While playing shorthanded, the team’s co-captain, Danny Hanlon, found himself on a breakaway and tied the game 2-2.
From there, the team did not look back.
The Golden Hawks scored four times over the last two periods, while goaltender Daniel Urbani shut the door, stopping 18 of 20 shots during the game.
Urbani, who recently committed [6] to Canisius College [7] in Buffalo, N.Y., said this year’s Golden Hawks never quit before the last buzzer – which was key to Wednesday’s victory.
“It went pretty well. We were down in the first period but the team rallied back, which we’ve been doing all year. But defensively, I think we played a strong game. I think in the first there was a couple (of) blips, but overall I think we played really well,” he said.
The Golden Hawks’ next game is Friday in Wellington, where they will face off against the Dukes [8] at 7:30 p.m.
