KINGSTON – Spencer Watson had a big night on Friday, scoring two goals and one assist, as he led his Kingston Frontenacs to a big 6-2 win over the London Knights.

The Frontenacs held their annual ‘Support the Troops’ night on Friday. They wore special camouflage uniforms that were auctioned off after the game, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going towards the Kingston Military Family Resource Centre and the Royal Military College Foundation.

The Knights got off to a quick start, with Toronto Maple Leafs prospect, Mitchell Marner, tapping in a cross-crease pass from the stick of Christian Dvorak. With the goal, Marner has 98 points on the season and sits third in the Ontario Hockey League scoring title race.

It didn’t take the Frontenacs long to respond. Watson scored on a Frontenacs power-play, nine minutes after the Knights first tally to tie the game at one, going into the first intermission.

The Frontenacs came out firing in the second period, with Watson getting his second goal of the game and 35th of the season, only 1:23 into the second frame. The Knights fired back shortly after, with Owen MacDonald tying the game just 51 seconds after Watson’s second goal.

After the Knights made the game 2-2, there was no looking back for the Frontenacs. Marner would head to the box after taking a tripping penalty. It would be a costly penalty for the Knights as Conor McGlynn made the game 3-2 on the Frontenacs third power-play of the game.

The Fronts would take their 3-2 lead into the third period.

The youngest member of the Frontenacs, Jason Robertson, would start off the scoring for the Fronts in the third period, firing a shot past Knights goaltender, Brendan Burke, for his 17th of the season.

Florida Panthers draft pick, Lawson Crouse, would roof the puck on a short-handed breakaway to give the Frontenacs a 5-2 lead with 11:05 remaining in the final frame.

The Knights would try to crawl their way get back into the game, but it was too little too late. Warren Foegele would take the puck down the ice to score his 10th of the season on the empty cage.

After Friday night’s victory over the Knights, the Kingston Frontenacs clinched first place in the OHL’s East Division with a little help from the Sudbury Wolves. It’s their second East Division title in franchise history.

The Fronts lock up the Leyden Trophy, which is awarded to the winner of the East Division. Their last title came in 1995 when the team finished with a 40-19-7-0 record.

The 2016 OHL Playoffs get underway after the season wraps up on Sunday March 20.
