KINGSTON – The Frontenacs had a weekend to forget, losing back-to-back games. The Fronts lost the first game in nail-biting fashion, with the Mississauga Steelheads edging the Fronts 2-1 on Friday night. The Fronts were back on the ice on Saturday night to take on the visiting Ottawa 67’s looking to get back into the win column.
Penalties would end up haunting the Frontenacs in this game with the Ottawa 67’s starting off the scoring with a power play goal coming from Artur Tyanulin, his 14th of the season.
Five minutes later the Fronts would tie it up with Spencer Watson showing excellent patience to get his 41st of the season to tie the game at one.
Ottawa would come back down the ice only 18 seconds later to get back their one goal lead with a perfectly placed shot from the stick of Tyanulin.
The Frontenacs wouldn’t take long to level the game with New York Islanders prospect, Michael Dal Colle, scoring his 26th of the season 12 minutes into the first frame.
The 67’s would capitalize again on another Frontenacs penalty, with Dante Salituro roofing the puck past Lucas Peressini to get his first of the game and 35th of the season. Salituro is the leading scorer on the 67’s with 80 points.
Ottawa would take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission.
Although the Frontenacs and 67’s combined for five goals through the first frame, the teams combined for only eight shots through the first 12 minutes of play in the second period.
It would take almost 18 minutes for the 67’s to get the first and only goal of the period, with Salituro scoring his second goal of the game.
Ottawa headed to the change room for the second intermission with a 4-2 lead.
The Frontenacs came out in the third period with a mission. The Fronts were on the attack for the greater part of the third period and it took eight minutes for them to finally get on the board. Warren Foegele would get his 12th of the season to cut the 67’s lead to only one goal.
Perissini would come up with a big save on a breakaway, stopping 67’s forward Nathan Todd’s shot to keep Ottawa’s lead to one goal.
The Frontenacs would march back down the ice after Peressini’s big save to tie the game at four, courtesy of Roland McKeown’s seventh of the season.
That sent the game to overtime.
The 67’s didn’t waste any time in overtime and scored 22 seconds into the extra frame. Tyanulin would get his third goal of the game and 16th of the season as hats flew from the K Rock Centre seats.
Although the Frontenacs didn’t get the results they wanted this weekend, they still sit in first place in the eastern conference with three games remaining in the Ontario Hockey League regular season. OHL playoffs begin on March. 24th.
