Police say they were misinformed in door-to-door fraud investigation

BELLEVILLE – Belleville police say there were misinformed when they sent out a news release on Tuesday warning about the possibility of fraud involving door to door solicitations by people collecting funds on behalf of the Canadian Diabetes Walk.

The release said that the Diabetes Association was not sponsoring any fundraiser that would require door to door canvassing.

In fact, there are two fundraising walks scheduled to take place in the area in May, and people participating in the walk may be doing door to door fundraising.

Police now say they are still investigating a possible fraud, but it appears to have been an isolated incident only involving one individual.

The Belleville Police have apologized for the confusion, but still advised citizens the best way to ensure the safety of their donations is to donate online or in person to people they know.

The police have asked that anyone with further questions or concern contact the Community Engagement Lead of the Canadian Diabetes Association at (613) 384-9374
