BELLEVILLE – Loyalist students had a chance to de-stress on Thursday by smashing a car to help raise money for the United Way of Quinte. [3]
“It’s a great way to come out and relieve stress in a way that most people might not be able too,” said Elizabeth Edwards, a post-graduate public relations student who, along with her class, helped organize the event.
This was first ever “Smash & Dash” event put on by the program which usually runs a fundraiser every year.
Other activities were also held inside the school including Smash Pong, Nailed It, Around the Way Wheel and Balloon Bust. They gave students the opportunity to win ballots for donated prize baskets.
Radio broadcasting student Brett Black took part in the event and said it was a great idea to help a local charity.
“It’s not often where if you want to donate to charity you’re actually able to hit an actual car with a sledgehammer, so that was pretty awesome,” Black said.
Local celebrities were also invited to stop by and participate. Among these local faces was Mayor Taso Christopher. [4] He said he was happy to come take part and support the students as well as the community.
“It gives an opportunity for the dignitaries to get involved with the students and raise some much needed money for the United Way.”
This event replaced the annual Truckload Sale [5], which raises funds for the United Way of Quinte by selling cheap products to students donated by Proctor & Gamble. This year P&G decided to donate products to those affected by the devastation of the Fort McMurray [6] fires.
