BELLEVILLE – The swing bridge in Brighton is set to close on Monday, Oct. 2 to undergo repairs.

According to Parks Canada, the swing bridge, which is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway, will be fixed up due to its age and condition.

The bridge dates back to 1947, and runs across the Murray Canal on County Rd. 64, connecting Prince Edward County and Quinte West.

It will be replaced with a heavier one, allowing mechanical and electrical upgrades to be made.

“The new bridge will allow the simultaneous flow of traffic in both directions and will meet current highway load standards, meaning the existing load restrictions will be removed once the project is complete,” according to the Parks Canada site.

The highway will also have a pedestrian walkway.

Parks Canada officials held a meeting in March 2017 to inform residents, business owners and elected officials in Quinte West, Brighton and Prince Edward County about the construction which will end in May 2018.

Parks Canada is encouraging drivers and pedestrians to take an alternate route.

QNet News will be speaking with Parks Canada officials to get more information.

More to come.
