Belleville hires engineers to stop wastewater problem

By Renée Rodgers

An engineering consulting firm has been hired to design a solution to the problems at Belleville’s Water Pollution Control Plant.

Belleville city council announced during a council meeting August 8 that it would hire XCG Consultants Ltd. .

Two years ago, XCG did a study at the city’s pollution control plant to identify ways to reduce untreated water from entering the Bay of Quinte.

During periods of high water flow, the plant’s water treatment capabilities are reduced, resulting in the release of water into the bay that has been disinfected, but not fully treated, said Rod Bovay, acting director of Engineering and Development Services at City Hall.

He added the Ontario Ministry of Environment has asked the city to solve the issue as quickly as possible.

The consultants have proposed three separate projects to fix the problem, with a total engineering cost of $185,000.
