BELLEVILLE – Waterways in the Quinte region have the potential for flooding due to ice conditions, Quinte Conservation [2] says.
in a press release issued Wednesday afternoon.
The bitter cold the region has been experiencing has led to ideal conditions for frazil ice, [3]a slushy form of ice created in fast-flowing water when temperatures are below -18. It can collect under normal ice or stick to bridges and other materials, causing rivers to overflow, according to a press lelease issued Wednesday by Quinte Conservation.
The conservation authority has been monitoring locations along the Salmon, Napanee and Moira waterways that are at risk of flooding.
The conditions are similar to those in 2004, when frazil ice caused problems in the same waterways, according to Quinte Conservation.
The organization has issued an early warning for potential flood conditions. The warning will be in place until Monday unless it is updated before then.
