Television channel to air NHL game instead of election results

By Keenan Weaver

With the Ontario provincial election just weeks away, Loyalist students have a tough decision to make. Not as tough, however, as CBC-TV’s decision to broadcast an NHL game instead of the election results on October 6.

The NHL season opener has Toronto hosting Montreal at 7 p.m. and will is likely to run past 9 p.m., when the election coverage begins.

While not available to the average viewer, the results will still be broadcast on the CBC News Network, their special order news channel.

But does CBC have their priorities straight?

Loyalist student Jaden Snoddon says yes.

“Hockey for sure,” he said confidently, “There’s always something to see the results after anyway. It’s Canada, it’s about playing the game.”

On the contrary, Meghan Allen isn’t as happy.

“I’d really rather watch the election coverage than Toronto play,” she said.

Desiree Carl said she doesn’t like hockey, and would rather be filled in on the results.

Those watching the game will get news ticker updates on the election as the game progresses.

The game starts at 7 p.m. on CBC, with live election coverage on the CBC News Network at 9.
