Conservation centre prepares for another season of helping injured turtles

By Graham Whittaker [1]

BELLEVILLE – As spring shows itself, turtles are returning to the roads – which means they’re at risk of being run over.

This means that the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre [2], a Peterborough-based charity devoted to protecting the turtles native to Ontario, is gearing up for a busy season.

Last year the centre declared a state of emergency due to the overabundance of injured turtles. It treated 1,382, while only having the resources to support 150 adults at one time.

In response it increased floor space in its Peterborough turtle hospital, the only one in the province, to accommodate extra turtles this year.

QNet News will be visiting the centre this week to find out more about the work it does.
