Lancers soccer player continues to improve

By Tyson Nayler [1]

BELLEVILLE – The Lancers [2] soccer team has had a tough start to this year’s season, but one thing has been going right for them: the emergence of Taylor Wightman [3].

The second-year player has been the team’s main offensive weapon, scoring all three of the Lancers goals in a season that’s been winless so far. Head coach Rob Terry, who’s know Wightman since her high-school says, her progress over the last few years has been incredible and that she has become a huge leader for the Lancers.

During last year’s season, Wightman only started in four of the regular-season games and was unable to score in any of them. But this year, she has started in all six games, and scored three goals in the first five.

“I think the biggest thing for me this year is that my confidence level has gone up a lot,” Wightman told QNet News. “With our new coach this year, all of us have improved throughout the season.”

Although it’s been a sluggish season so far for the Lancers, Wightman says she is still optimistic: “I’m hoping that we can be competitive in the upcoming games. Our goal every game is to go out and try our hardest, but ultimately we want to make the playoffs.”

The Lancers’ next four games are on the road and the team won’t be returning to Loyalist until Oct. 14, when the Lancers play Centennial College. In their last meeting, the two teams tied.
