Soccer Lady Lancers looking for first win

By Taylor Renkema

The Loyalist women’s soccer team will try to end a four-game losing streak Wednesday night when they face the Seneca Sting at Loyalist

The team is four games in with only three to go, and are still without a win, said Athletic Director Jim Buck.

“I thought we would be putting the ball in the net, but the reality is we’ve scored one goal in four games, and you don’t win a lot of games doing that,” he said.

Buck knows that since Loyalist is a smaller college there isn’t as much diversity among the athletes, so it’s harder to be a top contender. He said his daughter Lindsey, a goaltender for the Lancers, played ‘unbelievably’, on Saturday in the 3-0 loss to Algonquin. She sat the first half out and played the second half after another goalie let in two goals.

“It would always be nice to win, but that’s a good result against Algonquin who’s traditionally one of the top teams in the country,” Buck said.

He said that Loyalist usually loses by a much steeper score, sometimes up to 9-0.

There were a few coaching staff changes this season, with head coach Mike Whitehead stepping down. According to Buck, Mike and his brother Steve, the assistant coach of six years, were initially just reversing roles. However Buck said Mike realized about three weeks into the season he was simply too busy with family and other work, and he stepped away from the program altogether.

Buck said as head coach, Steve will have more responsibility and more accountability with regards to the team. He will also communicate much more with Buck about practices, player progress, transportation arrangements, and game locations.
