Inquest into death of worker in Prince Edward County scheduled in March

By Sarah Law [1]

BELLEVILLE – The death of a man working on a construction site in Prince Edward County more than two years ago is to be investigated at an inquest in March.

Matthew Robert Cuthill, 27,  died on Sept. 9, 2016, due to injuries sustained while on the job.

Dr. Paul Dungey, the regional supervising coroner at the Kingston office, made the announcement Monday. The inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act and will examine the circumstances surrounding Cuthill’s death.

Dr. Dungey told QNet News that “It’s all about public safety.”

He said inquests are meant to answer the who, what, when, where and why of the cause and manner of death. They are also intended to prevent future deaths and promote worker safety through a jury of people making recommendations.

The court is expected to hear from eight witnesses over the span of three days, starting on March 19 at the Quinte Courthouse.
