Police warn the public about Kijiji scam

By Logan Somers [1]

BELLEVILLE – Belleville police are warning people after a victim in the city  e-transferred $1,350 for a property they believed to be real but then realized didn’t exist.

Police say this type of crime is becoming popular among scam artists and thieves looking to make quick cash.

The scam artists tend to make posts on online sale sites like Kijiji. They will make a post regarding a rental property. Police say they will then ask you to e-transfer funds to an e-mail address. In most cases police say the properties are already occupied.

Police warn anyone who comes across an ad such as this to double check with the seller. Ask for photos and or to be personallly shown the property to verify its existence.

Police are asking anyone who may have any information about the  matter to please contact investigating officer Cst. Dave Johnson at (613)
966-0882 ext. 4141 or by e-mail at: djohnson@police.belleville.on.ca or by contacting Quinte Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
