BELLEVILLE – Habitat for Humanity now has a piece of land for its new housing project.
On Monday night, Belleville city council approved the donation of of the old police station on Dundas St. E to Habitat for Humanity as land for their proposal [3].
The site will be used for Habitat for Humanity’s 66 rental unit project.
“We are now going to designate the property to Habitat.” Mayor Mitch Panciuk said at the meeting. He also spoke about how the actual transferring of the land to Habitat for Humanity would be cost-free.
“In terms of the cost, there would be no cost, because it’s an asset that we would just transfer over, like we do with our other properties.”
Council also identified a secondary property to house the new project at the corner of Sydney and Bridge Street. It would be the backup site if the plot of land that the police station is on fell through.
Although the old police station is a smaller parcel of land than the land at Sydney and Bridge Street, the plan is for Habitat to build its multi-unit rental upwards.
