BELLEVILLE – The OPP is issuing a warning to drivers that it’s the time of year to watch out for deer.
Police say the majority of collisions in the last few years involving a deer and a vehicle have happened in November between 5 p.m. and midnight. Overall the number of accidents involving a deer has been increasing in the last four years, police say.
That’s because it’s mating season for deer. With their minds on other things, many bucks are not as cautious as they are at other times of the year.
Police also give some driving tips to stay safe:
- Scan ditches and not just the road ahead, you may spot deer or other animals approaching.
- Where you see one deer, expect more.
- Watch for glowing eyes at night.
- Don’t drive distracted.
- Don’t overdrive your headlights.
- Ensure you’re wearing your seatbelt. If you need to stop in a hurry, you want your body restrained to prevent unnecessary injury or possible death.
