New pin made to honour cats in wartime

BELLEVILLE – The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society has released a new commemorative pin in remembrance of cats during wartime.

In 2017, the first Animals in War pin was launched and every year since then a new animal is given the spotlight.

This year the cat is recognized for its part in comforting soldiers as companions as well as getting rid of vermin on ships. The cat symbolizes the sacrifice made by animals who have served and continue to serve alongside of Canadian veterans, the society says. 

“On Nov. 11, we remember all those who served, including the animals who stood bravely alongside our veterans,” Doug Brooks, the society’s chief executive officer, is quoted as saying in a press release Tuesday about the new pin.

The cat pin is the fourth animal in the Animals in War collection. Previous pins have featured a horse, a dog and a pigeon. Horses transported troops and hauled guns, dogs have served as messengers, medical assistants, bomb detectors and search and rescue workers, pigeons delivered crucial messages, and this year the cat symbolizes the contribution that all animals have made in wartime. 

“By wearing the Animals in War pin alongside your poppy this Remembrance Day, you are remembering the courage and sacrifice of our veterans and the animals who gave everything for us,” said Brooks.

Every one dollar from each pin sold will go to the Royal Canadian Legion branches to support veterans. The pin goes on sale on Tuesday, Oct. 12, and will be sold until Remembrance Day.
