BELLEVILLE – The Coats for Kids program in Quinte West is about to kick off for its 32nd year.
The program, started in 1991, is run by the Professional Firefighters Association, Local 1328 in Quinte West. Every year they hand out winter coats and winter gear to kids 18 and younger who need them. This year they’ll start handing out gear in November.
“In this program all winter items for kids would be provided except winter boots,” said Jason Alexander, a firefighter and coordinator for the program.
Again this year, the program is asking for the public’s help in providing for kids in need.
They are looking for new or slightly used winter gear. They’ll also take cash.
The donation centre is located at 85 Marmora St. right beside the fire station.
People can also donate at the fire station at 41 Dixon Rd in Trenton.
Alexander says most of what they hand out is new, but they also accept used.
“Used coats are wiped down and washed in machines,” he said.
“Our motive is that every child go out door with a brand new snow stuff,” he added.
The program also provides things like hats, mitts and scarfs.
“Church groups do a lot of knitting for us,” said Alexander.
Alexander says it’s a great feeling to connect with a child, show them the different coats, and have them pick their choice.
“They give a high five and it is very nice feeling to know that you have been able to give back to the community.”
