BELLEVILLE – People of Belleville will face traffic inconvenience during the construction of a new water pipe [2] through the central part of the city.
The project, which will begin in August and is expected to last 15 months, will involve running a new pipe from the Gerry O’Connor Water Treatment Plant [3] at the south end of Sidney Street to Moira Street East.
Stan Czyczyro [4], the project manager for the city, says there will be lane closures and traffic diversions on the affected streets but the goal is to cause as little disruption as possible.
“There will be some inconvenience. We are in the midst of developing a plan to manage the traffic … and try to do things so it’s as less an inconvenience as possible, but inevitably there will be an inconvenience.”
The new water pipe will follow a route along Sidney Street, Bridge Street West, Yeomans Street, Frank Street, Sarah Court, College Street West, Lane Avenue, Donald Street, Prince of Wales Drive and Moira Street East.
Yeomans Street, Lane Avenue and Donald Street to Prince of Wales Drive are going to be totally reconstructed. The other roads affected will be restored to their present condition or better, Czyczyro said.
The project is needed because the city has experienced water-pressure and supply problems in the city’s north end, he said.
It is the second phase of a $17-million plan to connect this new water pipe to work previously completed on Moira Street East.
A public information meeting is being held on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 116 Pinnacle St. [5] from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Members of the community may attend and ask questions to project staff.
