Titans doing well at Ontario championships

BELLEVILLE – The St. Theresa’s Titans girls’ hockey team is doing exceptionally well at the provincial championships.
The team has won all four of its games going into the semi-finals Thursday, head coach Rob Bunton said by phone from Sudbury, Ont., where the tournament is taking place.
If the Titans win in the semi-finals of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championship, will play in the AA-division final Thursday evening.
The team of 21 players made it to OFSSA by defeating the Cobourg West Vikings in the Central Ontario Secondary School Athletics championship.
The Titans have won COSSA for the past five years. They won OFSAA in 2012, but have also received two silvers and a bronze there, Bunton said.
The team is confident in this year’s OFSAA tournament, Bunton said. But he likes to remind the players that in one game anything can happen.
Bunton has been a teacher at St. Theresa’s Catholic Secondary School since it opened 14 years ago, but he’s been coaching for around 30 years. He really enjoys working with the kids on the team, he said.
“I think one of the neat things about high-school hockey is that you have Grade 9s playing with Grade 12s. It’s pretty neat to see the interaction between two groups that normally their paths might not cross, and then they become teammates. So the younger girls really look up to the older girls, and the older girls really take on a mentoring role.”
He likes to remind students that hockey isn’t everything, and that they can use their skills in other parts of their lives, he said.
“Ultimately, what you want your kids to do is to become passionate about the game, but also understand that the lessons that they’re learning they can take away from hockey. You want to teach them a little bit about winning, competing, being a good teammate, being a good person.”
