Belleville overrun with campaign signs

  • September 23, 2014 at 11:37 am

By Mark Hodgins

BELLEVILLE – “Sign, sign, everywhere a sign.”

Looking around town and seeing all the campaign signs for the municipal election, one would think Five Man Electrical Band‘s hit could be Belleville’s theme song.

In fact it’s gotten so bad that city council is looking at passing a bylaw that would limit or even ban signs on public property.

Speaking to the Belleville Intelligencer, Mayor Neil Ellis said the city has received more complaints about the number of signs than in any previous election. As a result, Ellis tabled a motion at Monday’s council meeting that would restrict signs on public property. Cities like Ajax and Pickering already have such restrictions. The motion was met with support from many councillors, and it was decided to have city staff look into the issue.

QNetNews will be out today talking to residents about the abundance of signs.

Updates to come…
