New Health Unit building remains on target

BELLEVILLE – It looks like the construction of a new headquarters for the Hastings and Prince Edward Counties Health Unit (HPECHU)  will come in under budget.

The health unit said there will be an additional cost of $140,676 due to the settlement of a cold weather claim by the contractor. There will also be an extra $5,000 for energy costs for the months of January and February.

But despite those extra costs, the health unit said the project remains well under budget and on track for an early March move-in date. An official opening ceremony is being planned for September.

The new facility is located directly behind the current one at 179 North Park St. in Belleville.

Calls for comment about the new building were not returned.

The health unit also issued a release of the new appointees and members on their Board of Health.

The Health Unit appointed former Vice-Chair Terry McGuigan as the new Chair of the board. Mayor of the municipality of Tweed, JoAnne Albert, was named Vice-Chair.

The Board also welcomed several new members:

  • Egerton Boyce: Belleville councillor
  • Jim Dunlop: Prince Edward County councillor
  • Sally Freeman: Quinte West councillor
  • Kevin Gale: Prince Edward County councillor
  • Michael Kotsovos: Quinte West councillor

Some members of the Board are returning:

  • Bonnie Adams: Township of Carlow Mayo reeve
  • JoAnne Albert: Municipality of Tweed mayor
  • Beth Campbell: Province of Ontario appointee
  • Deborah Goulden: Province of Ontario appointee
  • Douglas Lefreniere: Province of Ontario appointee
  • James McBride: Province of Ontario appointee
  • Terry McGuigan: Province of Ontario appointee
  • Jack Miller: Belleville councillor
  • Maureen Piercy: Province of Ontario appointee

The Health Unit is responsible for ensuring all residents residing in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties have access to public health services.
