OPP anti-speeding and jaywalking initiative in Trenton

  • February 26, 2015 at 1:32 pm

By Michelle Poirier

BELLEVILLE – Concerns about speeding and jaywalkers in the area of Trenton High School prompted the Quinte West OPP to increase their presence on Trenton’s Dundas Street West throughout February.

It’s a busy part of the city for people who commute into Trenton, with high motorist and pedestrian traffic, said Const. Maggie McCaughen from the OPP detachment.

“It was an initiative that one of the platoons put together,” McCaughen said. “For the month of February they wanted to direct their enforcement in that area.”

There were 17 tickets given out to drivers for things like speeding and distracted driving.

“During the month of February I think they definitely noticed a decrease in the speed because of the extra enforcement there,”McCaughen said.

The initiative focused on Dundas between Farley Crescent and Dufferin Avenue.

Officers also talked to high-school students about crossing the street at designated crosswalks.

McCaughen said the OPP are hopeful that the message will stick even after the initiative ends:

The OPP will continue to monitor the area and remind drivers to be cautious and follow speed limits.
